Killing the time...

Here I am at my lovely desk updating my blog and it's been a couple of days since I posted my last entry. Ok. Let's start the business...

6.00 a.m.
I woke up early today with the hope that not many people are using the bathroom at that particular time. I made the right decision for waking up early because they were only a few people in there when I came in. I did everything that was necessary and headed back to my room to get myself ready for lecture.

7.00 a.m.
I went down to the bus stop just a few steps away from the residential college together with my friends. We waited for our other counterparts to join us. A few minutes later, a bus came (after a few fully occupied buses passed by) and we boarded it to the lecture hall.

7.30 a.m.
It took us about half an hour before we reached Pusat Bahasa since the bus had to go to several other residential colleges to pick up the students. We stopped at the bus stop opposite FPend (Fakulti Pendidikan). Pusat Bahasa is just across the road.

7.45 a.m.
We waited outside the lecture hall because we were not sure which hall was going to be used. Apparently, there was a problem with the electricity that caused blackout. Then, we went upstairs and entered the room. There were also a few other students waited for the lecturer to arrive.

9.00 a.m.
While waiting for the lecturer to come we cracked some jokes and made the room 'alive' with our laughters. A moment later, a lady came and told us that the lecturer is not available and the lecture is postponed to next week. *sigh* All of us left the room and headed to Pusanika to fill our 'tank'.

9.30 a.m.
We arrived at Pusanika and headed to the cafeteria and had our late breakfast. After having our meal, I went up to UniMart to buy something. My other counterparts decided that they wanted to go the library and invited me to join them. Thought about it for a while and decided to go back to the hostel.

9.45 a.m.
Boarded the bus with my 2 friends - Nurul & Leen. We reached our residential college a moment later and I straight away went to the office to check whether my orders had arrived. *Sigh* I arrived at the office and realized that there was a notice at the counter - "Pejabat ditutup sementara. Sebarang urusan pejabat sila hubungi xxxxx."

9.50 a.m.
Reached my room. Opened the door, put my bag down, got changed and switched on my lappy - ONLINE. Surfed the net till afternoon and decided to skip lunch.

1.30 p.m.
Shut down my lappy and took my nap.

**To be continued**

In Loving Memory of Michael Joseph Jackson (1958-2009)

This is a poem dedicated to the greatest artist of all time the late Michael Jackson...

Michael Jackson (1958-2009)
::HIS MUSIC WILL LIVE FOREVER::

'We Had Him' by Maya Angelou

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing
Now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind

Without notice, our dear our songs among the stars and and walk our dances across the face of the moon

In the instant we learn, that Michael is gone we know nothing
No clocks can tell our time and no oceans can rush our tides
With the abrupt absence of our treasure

Though we our many, each of us is achingly alone
Piercingly alone
Only when we confess our confusion can we remember that he was a gift to us and we did have him

He came to us from the Creator, trailing creativity in abundance
Despite the anguish of life he was sheathed in mother love and family love and survived and did not more than that

He thrived with passion and compassion, humor and style
We had him
Whether we knew who he was or did not know, he was our's and we were his
We had him

Room K16A 311 - Rahim Kajai Residential College

Initially, I was told that my classmates and I will be staying at Za'aba residential college. The one where the horror tragedy happened few weeks before. Then, I received a text message saying that instead of Za'aba, we will be staying at Rahim Kajai residential college. On the 4th July, I arrived at the college, checked-in and got my room keys. I had no idea what my room will look like. So, I drag my heavy luggage down the staircases and went to the 3rd floor of the building. I opened the door and surprise...suprise...

We have balcony! Really unexpected...

This is the view from the balcony and my room mate loves this very much...Haha..."hidden agenda"...

We can even go the next room from the balcony! Haha...

My desk and wardrobe...

Untitled - just a thought put into words....

First of all, do not bother about the title of this post. Haha!! I actually have no idea to put in as a title.

The exam result was already out and I'm happy with my result even though I didn't get a 4.00 CGPA. I told mum and dad about my result and they were OK with it. Most importantly, I've tried my best and thanks to those who helped me in my studies all this while.

The other thing that bothers me a lot is the fact that the weather is extremely hot. El-Nino phenomenon bah! I've been staying at home for the past few days due to the current weather. The electric bill is definately skyrocketting because the air-con in the house are being utilised most of the time!

Not only the weather that bothers me, the spreading of the H1N1 virus also makes me think twice to go out especially to the crowded area such as the mall. Am I being too paranoid about it? Nope, I don't think so. I'm just taking the necessary precaution. The virus really niggling me because at the moment, Malaysia has already recorded 15 cases of the influenza! As I said earlier, I'm not being too paranoid and so far I've never seen people in Kota Kinabalu using the mask in while wandering around the town. Hopefully everything's under control by the Ministry of Health. I am aware that crowded places should be avoided but it certainly won't stop me from going to the cinema to watch Transformers 2 - Revenge of the Fallen!

The significance of the 'Unduk Ngadau'

There are still some people out there who do not know the significance of the 'Unduk Ngadau' in every year's Tadau Kaamatan (Harvest Festival). Since the mood of Kaamatan is still present, I would like to enlighten you all - the readers, about the legendary "Huminodun".

*************************************************

Source: Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) - kdca.org.my

“Unduk Ngadau” owes its origin from that part of Kadazandusun genesis story, which pertains to sacrifice of “Huminodun” - Kinoingan’s only begotten daughter. The legend went on to relate the following:

A long, long time age, the staple food of Kinoingan and his people was a type of grain called “Huvong”. One day, there was no huvong left to plant, nor other grains left for food. Kinoingan was so worried and felt very sorry for his people sufferings. It was said that Kinoingan sacrificed Huminodun, the only child to Kinoingan and Suminundu. She was the most beautiful maiden in her time, truly anyone who gaze at her lovely countenance would be transfixed and fall in love with her. She was also kind hearted and blessed with wisdom beyond her years.

Huminodun was willing to be a sacrifice and be an offering to the great earth so that there will be seeds once agaon for planting and there will be food for the people. Kinoingan was deeply saddened, but seeing that there was nothing else he could do to dissuade her, Kinoingan went ahead and cleared the land for planting. Through his supernatural powers, he was able to clear such a large area over many hills without any difficulty. When the time came for planting, Huminodun was brought to the cleared plot. As she was leaving, one cold hear the pitiful wails of great sadness from Suminundu, her mother. It was not at all easy for Huminodun to leave her mother and likewise her mother letting her only child go. The young men who had fallen in love with Huminodun could not let her go either. Indeed, they too cried and begged her to change her mid. However, there was nothing anyone could do, Huminodun had decided that her father’s people came before her.

When she arrived at the cleared plot, she turned to her father and said: “Father, you will see that my body will give rise to all sorts of edible plants for the people. My flesh will give rise to rice; my head, the coconut; my bones, tapioca; my toes, ginger; my teeth, maize; my knees, yams and others parts of my body to a variety of edible plants. This way never again will our people grow hungry to the point of dying.”

“However,” Huminodun continued, “Do follow these instructions of mine for it will guarantee us a bountiful harvest. When you have strewn parts of my body all over this clearings, do not come and see me for seven days and seven nights. When the padi has ripened, and it is time for harvest, do not start the harvest without doing this; take seven stalks of rice (padi) and tie them to one end of a spliced bamboo stick and them, plant this stick at the centre of the rice (padi) field. Only after this may you begin your harvesting activities. Later, place this bamboo stick with the seven rice (padi) stalks in the rice (padi) storage container (tangkob) when you bring it home after the harvest. For your first day harvest, do keep them in a big jar (kakanan). And, Father, do not give away your first year’s harvest because the grains may become bad. You can only give away your harvest to others in the second year.” (That is why to this day, the Kadazandusun people do not give away their first years harvest.)

Kinoingan agreed to follow all her instructions. So it was that when Kinoingan sacrificed Huminodun, the whole world turned dark and there was awesome thunder and lightning.

That year, the people had never seen such a harvest. It was plentiful. Kinoingan had done as Huminudun instructed He also kept away the first day’s harvest in the kakanan and harvested the first seven stalks of rice from the rice plot. The seven stalks of rice represented Bambaazon, the spirit of the padi or rice.

As for the rice in the jar, the kakanan, on the seventh day a beautiful maiden miraculously stood up out of the big jar. She was referred to as Undul Ngadau, the spirit of Huminodun. It was said that this Unduk Ngadau was the one who instructed the first Bobohizan or Kadazandusun priestess in her prayers.

Therefore to this day, the Kadazandusun people have included the Unduk Ngadau Pageant as a grand part of their Kaamatan Festivals. It is a manifestation to the deep sense of respect and admiration that the Kadazandusun people have for the legendary Huminodun. It is a sacred title ascribed to Huminodun, to her absolute abedience to Kinoingam, so much so as to be a willing sacrifice for the sake of the father’s creation. “Unduk Ngadau” then is commemorative term in praise of Huminodun’s eternal youth and the total beauty of her heart, mind and body.

The term “Unduk ” or “Tunduk” literally means the shoot of a plant, which, in it most tangible description, signifies youth and progressiveness. Likewise, in its literal meaning, “Ngadau” or “Tadau” means the sun, which connotes the total beauty of the heart, mind and body of an ideal Kadazandusun woman. In essence therefore the “Unduk Ngadau” is a processual event of selecting from among the Kadazandusun beauties, one who would resemble the ascribed personality of “Huminodun”.
