KIULU: Never mind the limousine. A couple here boarded a dinghy and braved the whitewater rapids of Sungai Tuaran to get to their wedding ceremony in Kampung Malanggang Baru, on Sunday. Floyd Rantey Maurice, 35, and Hamemarline Sumpongul, 22, shot the rapids together with their relatives and gong players before their nuptials.
Floyd from Kampung Malanggang Baru and his bride who comes from nearby Kampung Poturidong boarded their dinghy at Kiulu township and arrived about 40 minutes later, all wet but safe, by the river banks of Malanggang Baru.
"Actually, we wanted to recapture the way it was done in the old days when the groom picked up the bride using a raft en route to getting married," said Floyd.
But after taking into account the risks, they decided to board the dinghy together to go the groom's home for the wedding, the sounds of the gong attracting many villagers to see the four rubber dinghies on the river.
At the hall in Malanggang Baru, the couple who are Adventists, received the blessing of the union with their relatives witnessing the ceremony.
